Moloka`i Homestead Kuleana

As a Kanaka Maoli, we must recognize and holdfast our given Kuleana. As Moloka`i homesteaders our Kuleana is to care for our `Aina, `Aina Ho`opulapula.

Culture

Moloka`i has the most native Hawaiians per capita in the State of Hawai'i. Many Moloka`i homesteaders are self-sufficient; they maintain a subsistence lifestyle. The rural island of Moloka`i allows the natives Hawaiians the opportunity to fish, hunt and live in the traditional ways.

Preservation of our Natural Resources

As native people of Hawai`i, it is our responsibility to preserve our natural resources. Moloka`i homesteaders have united to protect our precious water, land, sea, and air. Molokaian's have been instrumental in preventing undesirable development that may harm our natural resources. Economic gain has not influenced our Kuleana. Presently, the homesteaders are defending the water rights of the Moloka'i Irrigation System (MIS).

Economy

The Ahupua` a o Moloka`i homesteaders strongly support diversified agriculture as the primary economy sustenance, subsequent to Prince Kuhio vision of “`Aina Ho`opulpula ”. It is our hope that the next generation of homesteader's developes meaningful employment skills through higher education and/or training, thus contributing to the desired economic growth of our Moloka`i homestead community.
